Schreiber (sbs) After buying and listening to the Omar Torres memorial album published by the Argentine :e(m)r; label, I was in a pretty cheerful bandoneón mood, so I decided to purchase some more "heavy-duty bandoneón stuff" from them. This album is an excellent document of the rich musical history of Rosario. In 1994, 78 years old bandoneón legend Domingo Serafín Federico recorded nine of his compositions with a newly founded tango orchestra for young talented musicians, along with some classics by Carlos Gardel and others, proving how easily generation boundaries can be crossed by means of the magic of music. This Argentine tango orchestra is REALLY HUGE! It comprises young people from the National College in Buenos Aires, performing on a vast variety of instruments, plus vocals. They've got a large string section, woodwind, bandoneónes, piano, guitar, bass, and drums, so their sound is really opulent. Although they play original works written by director Gustavo Dinzelbacher, too, most tracks on this album are arrangements of good old classics, featuring renowned composers like Aníbal Troilo, Juan Carlos Cobián, Astor Piazzolla, Horacio Salgán, Lucio Demare, Juan de Dios Filiberto, and others.
